High Intensity Focused Ultrasound

HIFU is a new way to treat cancer, and is a non-invasive treatment that minimizes side effects and preserves patient quality of life.

HIFU has so far been most successful in treating prostate cancer, and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) have recently recommended the use of HIFU for the treatment of prostate cancer in the UK.

HIFU works by heating the cancerous cells, and has the potential to treat tumours with less damaging side-effects, it does this by targeting just the cancerous tissue, and can be given in one to three hours on an outpatient basis, with epidural anaesthesia – which is great news!

More detailed information on HIFU can be found at www.ukhifu.co.uk

Cryotherapy

Only research can answer the problems of prostate cancer

Scientist using microscope

This procedure is used to treat carcinoma of the prostate that has been unsuccessfully treated via another method, most typically radiation or hormones.

The procedure is performed by inserting cryotherapeutic probes into the prostate gland. These are then used to freeze the gland along with any cancerous tissue, thus destroying the diseased tissue.

Photo-dynamic Therapy

Photo-dynamic therapy uses light, and has been used to treat other forms of cancer, mainly in the head and neck. Cryotherapy for prostate cancer is still very new, and is currently being investigated for trials in the UK.

More information on new treatments can be found at www.lua.co.uk

The treatment you are offered will very much depend on your prostate cancer, if it is a low grade and has not spread your options will be different to if you have a higher grade cancer that has spread outside of the prostate.

As with all these treatments, talk to your surgeon about which is the best for you, and don’t forget, find out as much as you can about them, speak to other men who have undergone these procedures if you can, and remember it’s your body, so don’t be bullied, take your time, and do what is right for you and your family.
